DWP PIP Update: £737 Payments Scrapped and New Voucher Scheme Introduced

What is PIP?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit that helps people with disabilities or long-term health conditions meet the extra costs of daily living. It is paid every four weeks and can be claimed by people aged 16 or over who have not reached State Pension age.

Changes to PIP

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that it is scrapping the current PIP assessment process and replacing it with a new system. The changes will come into effect in 2024.

Under the new system, people will no longer be required to attend a face-to-face assessment. Instead, they will be asked to complete a questionnaire and provide evidence of their condition.

New Voucher Scheme

The DWP has also announced that it is introducing a new voucher scheme to help people with PIP buy essential items. The scheme will be available from 2024 and will provide people with vouchers worth up to £737 every year.

The vouchers can be used to buy a range of items, including:

Impact of the Changes

The changes to PIP are likely to have a significant impact on people who claim the benefit. The new assessment process is likely to be more streamlined and efficient, and the new voucher scheme will provide people with more flexibility in how they spend their money.

However, there is also concern that the changes could lead to some people losing out on benefits. The new assessment process may not be as accurate as the current system, and the new voucher scheme may not provide people with the same level of support.

Next Steps

The DWP is currently consulting on the changes to PIP. The consultation will close on 14th February 2023. The DWP will then consider the responses to the consultation before making a final decision on the changes.

If you are affected by the changes to PIP, you can get more information from the DWP website or by calling the PIP helpline on 0800 121 4433.
