83-year-old woman drives wrong way on Autobahn, ignores police

A woman aged 83 drove against the wrong direction on the A33 motorway near Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, on Saturday night, and ignored police signals multiple times.

The woman drove for around 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) on the wrong side of the road before she was stopped by the police near the Ladbergen exit. Police said she had put other drivers at risk. Officers had tried to stop her using hand signals and blue lights, but she ignored them.

The officers eventually managed to stop the woman by placing a police car in front of her vehicle. She was taken to a police station for questioning.

Police said the woman, from Melle, near Osnabrück, had no alcohol or drugs in her system. They said she told them she had made a mistake. Her driving license has been revoked.

The incident caused long tailbacks on the A33. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
