Jakupovic Nets Brace as Wolfsburg Downs Salzburg Conqueror Zagreb
Austrian forward nets twice in commanding victory
Wolfsburg striker Josip Jakupovic has continued his impressive scoring form, netting a brace in his side's comfortable 3-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
Wolfsburg's dominance
The German outfit, who overcame Austrian champions Salzburg in the previous round, asserted their dominance from the outset at the Stadion Maksimir. Jakupovic opened the scoring in the 17th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area and firing home. The Croatian international doubled his tally just before the hour mark, heading in a cross from Ridle Baku.
Wolfsburg's third goal came in the 73rd minute through Yannick Gerhardt, who tapped in from close range after a fine team move. The visitors controlled possession throughout the match and limited Zagreb to few clear-cut chances.
Jakupovic's impressive form
Jakupovic's goals took his tally to five in the Europa League this season, making him the competition's joint-top scorer. The 29-year-old has been in fine form since joining Wolfsburg in January, scoring eight goals in all competitions.
Wolfsburg's progression
Wolfsburg's victory puts them in a strong position to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. They will take a 3-0 lead into the second leg at the Volkswagen Arena on March 16.
