Japan PM Ishiba to Stay in Office After Election Setback

Japan's Prime Minister Noboru Ishiba said Tuesday that he will remain in office despite his ruling party's setback in recent elections.
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost control of the upper house of parliament in Sunday's election, a major blow to Ishiba, who has been in power for less than a year.
Ishiba said he takes responsibility for the election results but that he is determined to continue leading the country.
"I will continue to work hard to meet the expectations of the people," Ishiba said at a news conference.
Ishiba's announcement came as a surprise to some observers, who had speculated that he might resign.
The LDP's loss of the upper house gives the opposition a majority in both houses of parliament, a situation that could make it difficult for Ishiba to pass legislation.
However, Ishiba said he is confident that he can work with the opposition to find common ground.
"I am committed to working with all parties to address the challenges facing our country," Ishiba said.
Ishiba's decision to stay in office is likely to be welcomed by some in the LDP, who believe that he is the best person to lead the party through this difficult time.
However, others may question whether Ishiba can be effective as prime minister with a weakened LDP.
Only time will tell whether Ishiba can overcome the challenges facing his government and lead Japan to a brighter future.
