PM says media should have control of content used in AI
Media companies should have control over how their content is used in artificial intelligence (AI) systems, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says.
Albanese made the comments at the launch of the government's new AI strategy, which aims to make Australia a "leader" in the development and use of AI.
He said AI has the potential to "transform our lives" but it is important to ensure that it is used in a responsible and ethical way.
"We need to make sure that AI is used for good, not for evil," he said.
"We need to make sure that AI is used to benefit humanity, not to harm it."
Albanese said the government's AI strategy will focus on four key areas:
- Investing in research and development
- Developing a skilled workforce
- Creating a supportive regulatory environment
- Promoting the ethical use of AI
He said the government will work with industry, academia and the community to develop a "national AI ethics framework".
"This framework will help to ensure that AI is used in a responsible and ethical way," he said.
Albanese said the government will also establish an AI Standards Hub to help businesses and organisations understand and implement AI standards.
"This hub will provide a central point of contact for businesses and organisations seeking information and advice on AI standards," he said.
Albanese said the government's AI strategy is a "significant step forward" in Australia's development as a leading AI nation.
"We are well-positioned to be a global leader in AI," he said.
"We have the talent, the research capability and the industry expertise to succeed."
Media control over AI content
Albanese said the government is committed to ensuring that media companies have control over how their content is used in AI systems.
"We believe that media companies should have the right to decide how their content is used," he said.
"We will work with industry to develop a framework that will give media companies the control they need."
Albanese said the government is also committed to ensuring that AI is used to support the work of journalists.
"AI can be used to help journalists find stories, fact-check information and produce content," he said.
"We will work with industry to develop ways to use AI to support the work of journalists."
Conclusion
The government's AI strategy is a significant step forward in Australia's development as a leading AI nation.
The strategy will help to ensure that AI is used in a responsible and ethical way, and that media companies have control over how their content is used in AI systems.
