Power work underway at Tahoe
Crews prepare for remainder of winter season
Work to replace 3 miles of overhead power line
LINCOLN, Calif. – With the majority of snow melted and the bulk of winter storms likely behind them, crews with Liberty Utilities are preparing for the upcoming winter season by working to replace a 3-mile section of overhead power line that runs from the Cisco substation on Interstate 80 to the Boreal substation along Highway 89.
Originally installed in the 1950s, the line has required frequent and costly maintenance due to storm damage and aging equipment. Replacing the 12kV line will greatly improve service reliability for Liberty customers in the area, including the Boreal Mountain Resort and Royal Gorge Cross Country Ski Resort.
Crews began replacing the poles and wires in April. Work is expected to be complete by June.
While the majority of the work has taken place along the highway right-of-way, there may be brief periods when crews need to work in the highway. Liberty crews will coordinate with the California Department of Transportation to ensure minimal traffic impacts. Travelers should expect possible delays and prepare for changing traffic patterns.
“Replacing this section of power line is critical for the long-term reliability of our electrical grid in the area,” said John Gaertner, Liberty Utilities’ vice president of operations. “We understand that any construction work can be disruptive and we appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we complete this important project.”
