Severe Thunderstorms Unlikely to Impact Most of the US

Enhanced Risk of Severe Storms Today and Tonight

Derecho Damage Affects Several States, Severe Weather Expected to Continue

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Enhanced Risk of Severe Thunderstorms for today and tonight, affecting a zone extending from the Great Lakes to the Ohio Valley. This comes after two derechos, or widespread damaging windstorms, swept through the Midwest and Northeast in recent days, causing significant damage.

The NWS warns that severe storms may produce hail up to golf ball size, damaging winds, and tornadoes. Heavy rainfall is also a possibility, leading to flash flooding.

Residents in affected areas are urged to monitor weather forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if necessary.

Day 4-8 Forecast Indicates Elevated Risk for Severe Thunderstorms

The NWS has also issued a Day 4-8 forecast indicating a 15-30% or higher probability for severe thunderstorms in some areas of the country. This includes parts of the central and southern Plains, the Ohio Valley, and the Southeast.

While severe thunderstorms are not expected to be as widespread as the recent derechos, the NWS advises residents in these areas to remain vigilant and be aware of the potential for severe weather.
